Commissions

Our Future Heritage - 1 x Lead Artist Commission and 3 x Artists

Why future heritage?
“Heritage has a unique relationship to the future. It encompasses society’s deliberate efforts to intervene in the society to come, to pass on an inheritance to future generations. This inheritance reflects the values of our time: heritage is what we care about, and what we think future society should have the chance to care about, too. In this way, it is the source of continuity between the society of the past, present and future, underpinning our identity and guiding our aspirations.” – University College London (09/03/2023)

Commission programme: Lead Artist
We are looking for a resident artist to lead in shaping a pilot project ‘Our Future Heritage’ which will deliver public-facing participation and engagement through activities and interventions within creative and non-gallery spaces on the high street in Grimsby town centre. The lead will also provide mentoring support to three emerging artists and capture younger creatives’ voices within the project.

Our Future Heritage will create conversations around our heritage, inheritance, inclusion, and identity and explore how this will be presented and experienced now and by future generations.

The lead artist must have experience in community engagement and an interest in heritage. Based in spaces on the high street the lead artist will engage the community in the making processes and include but not be limited to pop-up workshops and/or exhibitions/installations, interventions, creative collecting and sharing opportunities.

Creative Commission: 3 x Artists

We are looking for emerging artists for three commissions as part of a pilot project ‘Our Future Heritage’, which will deliver public-facing participation and engagement through activities and interventions within creative and non-gallery spaces on the high street in Grimsby town centre. With support from the Our Big Picture team and an appointed lead resident artist, commissioned specifically to steer the project and mentor artists.

The Our Future Heritage will create conversations around our heritage, inheritance, inclusion and identity and explore how this will be presented and experienced now and by future generations.

The commissions are aimed at local emerging artists with an interest in community engagement and heritage. Based in spaces on the high street artists will engage the community in the artists-making processes and could include but not be limited to pop-up workshops and/or exhibitions/installations, interventions, creative collecting and sharing opportunities.

Outcomes and Project Delivery
This highly visible, place-based project will offer local emerging artists the opportunity to collaborate in different ways, nurture new ways of thinking and gain experience in public participation.

Our Future Heritage will run for a duration of 2-3 months, the successful candidates must be available to work on the commission for a minimum of 2-week residency during the project timescales (June 2023 – September 2023) to deliver the project and provide regular updates and progress throughout.

  • This commissioned project will have a visual art focus, in its widest context may include photography, sound, and movement.
  • This project will include gaining experience through peer-to-peer work with a highly experienced lead artist.
  • The lead artist and the artists will use pre-arranged non-gallery public spaces to create arts interactions and conversations with the public. OBP HQ, located on Grimsby high street, will be used as a central base for the public and artists to drop in and find out more, and a public sign-up point if needed for the participatory activity.
  • The lead artist residency runs alongside the additional 3 artist commissions. The lead artist will be expected to collaborate with the local emerging artists to provide mentoring and support, valuable experience and build confidence.
  • Artists will explore making and creating arts interactions and conversations with the public. The aim of the project is to break down the wall between artist processes and the final outcome of work.
  • The project must include participatory elements to engage the local community.
  • All the artists including the lead will need to hold their own PL insurance. Please also advise if you hold a current DBS check. OBP can advise the successful candidates if these are not already in place
