Beyond Scale
An exhibition of new and recent works by Leeds-based artist Hondartza Fraga.
Beyond Scale is an exhibition by artist Hondartza Fraga exploring our relationships with places and objects that are too big or too small, too far or too close to be apprehended directly. Recent works interpret techno-scientific imagery to connect contrasting visions of the cosmos, from myth and astrology to modern astronomy. Fraga takes a multimedia approach to making, but her practice is grounded in drawing. The exhibition will also include recent works exploring Saturn through the raw images from NASA’s Cassini mission and newly commissioned drawings inspired by robotic imaging of Mars.
Many of the works play with scale, using small or domestic objects to evoke boundless spaces. Oyster shells become islands; book covers become ocean surfaces, and in her new drawings, the expanse of Mars is rendered in tiny but life-size fragments. The exhibition will also feature Fraga’s own micro gallery, presenting works by the Hyphae Drawing Collective in response to the themes of the show.
