‘Our Haven’ is a community heritage and arts project that gives everyone from Grimsby the opportunity to explore in their own way our heritage of memories, places, objects, beliefs, and legends. We also want to be able to discuss what our future heritage might look like.
There will be creative activities, celebrations and collaborations over the coming months that you, your family, and friends can get involved with. Your creations will directly influence new public artwork and designs in the town.
Without the River Haven Grimsby would not exist.
The Haven was the first point of shelter from the forces of the North Sea and Humber Estuary. A marshland landing point that saw early Saxon settlers and inspired our town’s legend of the mythical Grim, who set up home here after rescuing the young heir to the Danish throne Havelock. The Industrial revolution saw the Haven, now called the old docks , develop with the establishment of the Great Grimsby fishing industry. Today it is a modern port that supports new industries such as renewable energy.
Our Haven is our place, our Home. We have an abundance of heritage and immensely creative people and we want to hear from you about joining this journey of creative exploration!
At the moment we have two projects you can get involved with:-
• Garth Lane
– Bridge Design and elaboration
– Pathways over and from the bridge
– Wildlife Conservation
• St James Square
– Artists Commission and community heritage and arts engagement
If you are a School or community group we would love to hear from you. We are in the process of creating an online platform where you can upload your school’s work. In the meantime please email it to us for upload.
