Lino Print Artist Graham Firth

Our resident lino print artist Graham Firth was ask to join us from January to June 2019 to capture the ‘Market People’ – portraying the familiar and routine of market life and uncovering the characters of the market – the stall holders and the people who visit and work on the market.

He worked on the Market most Thursdays and Saturdays using his own homemade press, he has held workshops, demonstrations, a final exhibition and two permanent pieces within the walkway of the market.

Our Big Picture appointed Graham Firth as ‘Artist in Residency’ for the Art in the Market project.

“My brief was to produce artworks which would show the vibrancy and diversity of the market. I visited the market and was impressed by the variety and quality of the stalls. Producing work for this exhibition has been a great learning experience”

This exhibition is the outcome of the project. The prints are all linocuts and were all totally printed on the spot in this market, usually on Tuesday, Thursdays and Saturdays. The drawings were also mainly completed on the spot using an Apple I pad 6, which I bought just after Christmas. The first drawing I made is called “That Card Stall”, in fact this was only the second time I had ever used my I pad having never used a digital drawing device before. The self-inflicted pressure meant that I had to learn quickly.

Eventually this new skill influenced my Linoprints, so this residency has been a great learning experience.

I have enjoyed my time immensely at Grimsby Top Town Market, everyone has been helpful and friendly and welcoming. I would like to thank them all, along with Paula and Wendy from “Our Big Picture”, who have also done everything to make me comfortable and have been supportive throughout. I would like to apologise to those stall holders that I was unable to draw but I really did not have enough time.

I hope you enjoy this exhibition!
